Hazelnuts, also known as filberts, are a good source of fiber, thiamin, magnesium, and vitamin E. Filberts may have gotten their name because they were harvested starting on St. Filbert's Day, which is August 22. Filberts grow on trees in clusters. They are not ready to be eaten until they release from their hulls, which is about six weeks after harvest. Filberts are native to China, although they were also a favorite of the Ancient Greeks, who ate filberts and attempted to use them as a cure for baldness.
